
How to Drill Benchtop Tap Holes in Stone
A tap hole looks small, but it is one of the least forgiving cuts you can make in a finished stone benchtop. If you are working out how to drill benchtop tap holes, the job is not simply about getting through the stone. The hole must be in the exact position, suit the tap hardware, avoid cracking the slab and be completed with proper silica dust controls.
For an installed benchtop, particularly one sitting over new cabinetry, splashbacks and a finished kitchen, this is specialist work. One incorrect measurement or a dry cut can turn a straightforward plumbing upgrade into an expensive replacement job.
Start with the tap, sink and plumbing layout
The hole position should never be guessed from the centre of the sink alone. Start with the tap manufacturer’s specifications, including the required hole diameter, base plate size and any clearance needed for handles, pull-out hoses or a filtered-water mixer.
Most mixer taps require a hole around 32 mm to 35 mm, but that is not a universal rule. Zip taps, filtered water taps, soap dispensers and multi-function tap sets can all need different diameters and spacing. If several holes are being added, confirm the complete layout before the first cut begins.
The tap also needs enough clearance from the splashback and sink edge. A tap that technically fits through the stone can still be awkward to install if the fixing nut cannot be reached from below, or if the hose fouls on the cabinet back. Check what is underneath the proposed location, including cabinet rails, drawers, plumbing and any support structure.
For undermount sinks, the hole should be positioned with care so it does not sit too close to the sink cut-out. Stone is strongest when there is enough material around every opening. Cutting too near an existing edge, corner or join increases the chance of damage.
Confirm what stone you are drilling
Natural stone, porcelain, sintered stone and engineered stone do not all behave the same way under a core drill. Granite can be hard and abrasive. Marble is generally softer but may chip or bruise at the surface. Porcelain is dense and brittle. Engineered stone may contain crystalline silica, which creates a serious health risk when dust is generated.
The slab thickness matters as well. A 20 mm benchtop, 40 mm laminated edge and heavily veined natural stone each need a different level of care. Existing cracks, weak veins, old repairs and thin sections around sink cut-outs should be identified before work starts.
This assessment determines the cutting method, drill speed, core bit and water control needed for a clean result. It is also why a general handyman drill setup is not a suitable answer for a high-value benchtop.
How to drill benchtop tap holes with wet cutting
A professional tap-hole cut begins with accurate measuring and marking. The centre point is checked against the sink, tap template and access below the benchtop. It is then measured again from fixed reference points such as the splashback, cabinet edge or sink opening. This avoids a common mistake: measuring from an edge that is not perfectly square.
The drilling area is protected before cutting starts. In an existing kitchen, that means managing water, covering nearby joinery and appliances, and keeping the work zone controlled. Wet cutting uses a constant water supply at the diamond core bit to cool the stone, reduce friction and suppress airborne dust at the source.
The operator starts the core drill carefully to prevent the bit skating across the polished surface. Depending on the stone and access, a guide may be used to hold the bit in position during the initial cut. Excessive pressure is avoided. Forcing a diamond bit can overheat the stone, chip the surface or create stress that later develops into a crack.
As the bit progresses through the slab, the water flow and drilling speed need to remain consistent. The aim is a straight, clean opening with a tidy edge that will be covered by the tap’s base or escutcheon. Once the core is released, the hole is checked for sharp edges and the tap is dry-fitted before the plumber completes the installation.
Why dry drilling is not worth the risk
Dry drilling stone inside a home creates two immediate problems: airborne dust and heat. With engineered stone, dust can contain respirable crystalline silica. These particles are not something you can safely deal with by opening windows, using a household vacuum or throwing a drop sheet over the sink.
Heat is the other issue. A dry core bit can build temperature quickly, especially in dense stone. That heat places stress on the slab and can contribute to cracking, discolouration or a chipped finish around the hole. Water keeps the cutting zone cool while helping to contain dust and slurry.
Wet cutting does create slurry, so it still needs proper control. Water should not be allowed to run into cupboards, electrical outlets or finished flooring. A capable on-site stone cutter plans for containment and clean-up as part of the job, not as an afterthought.
Common mistakes that damage stone benchtops
The most expensive errors usually happen before drilling begins. An incorrect centre mark can leave a tap too close to the splashback, off-centre over the sink or impossible to connect underneath. There is no simple patch for a misplaced hole in stone.
Using the wrong core bit is another issue. Cheap or unsuitable bits can chatter, glaze over, chip the polished surface or stall before reaching full depth. Percussion or hammer drilling is also unsuitable for stone benchtops. The vibration can cause chips and fractures, particularly near cut-outs and joins.
Do not assume a new tap will cover an old hole or that a larger hole is always an easy fix. Enlarging an opening changes the amount of stone supporting the fitting and can expose a chipped or uneven edge. It may be workable, but it needs to be assessed based on the slab, hole location and hardware being installed.
When to bring in a stone-cutting specialist
A single tap hole may sound like a minor task, but it becomes a professional job when the benchtop is installed, the material contains silica, the hole sits near a sink cut-out, or the kitchen is already complete. The same applies when fitting a Zip tap, popup power point, additional filtered-water tap or a new sink configuration.

This avoids the disruption of trying to transport a heavy, fragile benchtop back to a workshop, and it gives the installer a chance to confirm the final position with the plumber or cabinet installer on site.

Plan the hole before the plumber arrives
The best time to organise a tap-hole cut is after the final tap has been selected and before plumbing fit-off is booked. Have the model details available, confirm the finished sink position and make sure access to the cabinet is clear.
