Drilling granite is not comparable to drilling timber, plasterboard or even tile. Granite is hard, brittle and expensive to replace. The challenge is not simply getting through the stone. It is producing a clean, correctly located hole without chipping the face, cracking the slab, damaging cabinets below or creating hazardous silica-containing dust.
What granite benchtop drilling is used for
Most drilling requests are part of a kitchen, laundry or butler's pantry upgrade. A new mixer tap may need a larger hole than the existing fitting. A filtered-water tap, instant hot and cold unit, soap dispenser or air switch may need its own opening. Electricians may also need accurately placed holes for popup power points or cable access.
The correct hole diameter depends on the fitting, not guesswork. A tap body may need clearance for threaded fittings, washers and mounting hardware, while popup power units often require a much larger opening and clear space under the benchtop. The cut location must work with the cabinet, drawers, sink bowls, plumbing, power leads and appliance clearances below.
This is why measurements should be confirmed from the actual product specifications before work starts. Packaging labels and online descriptions can be incomplete. If the fitting is on site, it is easier to check the required hole size and underside clearance properly.
Why wet drilling is the non-negotiable method
Dry drilling stone creates airborne dust. With engineered stone, that dust can contain very high levels of respirable crystalline silica. Natural granite can also contain silica. Breathing fine silica dust is a serious health risk, and dust can travel through finished rooms, settle in cupboards and contaminate surrounding areas.
Wet drilling controls dust at its source. Water cools the diamond core drill, reduces heat build-up and captures cutting slurry rather than allowing fine particles to become airborne. Cooling is also vital for the stone itself. Excessive heat and pressure can stress a benchtop, particularly near an edge, joint, cut-out or weak point in the slab.
Wet cutting does not mean water is allowed to run through the kitchen. A capable mobile operator uses controlled water delivery, slurry collection and protection around the work area. The aim is a clean work zone, not a wet cabinet or a mess left for the homeowner to manage.
For existing homes, this approach matters even more. Kitchens are usually occupied, floors are finished and nearby rooms may contain furniture, food and appliances. A quick dry cut is never worth the dust exposure or cleanup problem it can create.
Check the stone before choosing a hole location
The visible top surface does not show the full picture. Before a granite benchtop is drilled, the operator needs to assess the slab thickness, access underneath and its condition. The position of sinks, cooktop cut-outs, joins and overhangs all affects the safe drilling approach.
A hole may look centred from above but be impossible from below because it lands over a cabinet rail, drawer runner, sink rim or plumbing line. Moving a hole a small distance can solve the access issue, but only if it still works with the fitting and maintains suitable clearance from vulnerable sections of stone.
Avoid placing holes too close to an edge, a sink cut-out, a cooktop opening or a seam. These areas have less stone supporting them and can be more susceptible to chipping or cracking. There is no universal edge distance that suits every job. It depends on the slab thickness, the hole diameter, the existing cut-outs, the stone condition and how the benchtop is supported.
Hairline cracks, old chips and poorly supported overhangs deserve special attention. Drilling may still be possible, but the risk profile changes. A professional should explain any concern before proceeding rather than treating all stone surfaces as identical.
Natural granite and engineered stone are different materials
Homeowners often use “granite” as a general term for any hard stone benchtop. It is worth identifying the actual material. Natural granite, marble, porcelain, quartzite and engineered stone can respond differently to drilling, particularly around edges and existing cut-outs.
Engineered stone requires strict silica controls due to its manufactured mineral content. Marble can chip more easily. Porcelain may need a different drilling technique due to its dense surface and slab construction. The same safety-led, wet-cutting principle applies, but the tooling, speed and pressure must match the material.
If you are unsure what your benchtop is made from, provide clear photos of the top, edge profile and underside where possible. Photos of the proposed location, cabinet interior and the fitting being installed help establish what is required before anyone arrives.
The drilling process that protects the benchtop
A clean result starts with marking out. The hole centre should be measured from fixed reference points, such as the wall, edge, sink cut-out or cabinet side, then checked against the installed or planned fitting. The installer should also confirm that the fitting will sit flat and that its base plate covers the finished hole cleanly.
The work area is then protected. This includes surrounding stone, cabinets, appliances and flooring. Wet drilling equipment is positioned to keep the core drill stable and square to the surface. Starting the core drill carefully is essential. If it skates across polished stone, it can mark the benchtop before the hole is established.
Once drilling begins, controlled water is used to cool the diamond tool and suppress dust. The operator applies steady pressure rather than forcing the drill. Rushing creates heat, vibration and a greater chance of breakout as the drill exits the underside of the stone.
The final breakthrough is one of the most delicate moments. Good support and controlled technique minimise chipping around the exit point. On many jobs, the top surface is the visible priority, but the underside still matters. A rough or damaged exit can interfere with washers, brackets and plumbing fittings.
After drilling, the hole edges should be checked for cleanliness and the site wiped down. Before the trade moves on, it is smart to test-fit the tap, power unit or plumbing hardware. Finding a clearance problem immediately is far easier than discovering it after the area has been sealed or connected.
Common mistakes that turn a small hole into a major repair
The most expensive errors usually happen before the drill touches the stone. Four checks prevent many of them:

These trades are experts in their own work, but stone modification is a specialist task with separate equipment, dust controls and risk management. Coordinating the hole location with the relevant trade is essential. Asking them to drill the slab without the right process is not.
