A new cooktop, undermount sink or pop-up power point should not mean gambling with an installed benchtop. Under the engineered stone rules 2026, the key question is not simply whether a slab can be cut. It is whether the work is permitted, planned and carried out with controls that protect everyone in and around the home.

For Sydney homeowners and the trades coordinating kitchen work, this matters most when a benchtop is already installed. The slab may be valuable, the cabinets are finished, and the room may be connected to the rest of the house. A careless cut can create a silica exposure risk, spread contamination through the property, or crack the stone you were trying to preserve.

Engineered stone rules 2026: start with the job type

Australia prohibited the manufacture, supply, processing and installation of most engineered stone from 1 July 2024. The prohibition remains the starting point in 2026. It was introduced because cutting engineered stone can release respirable crystalline silica, or silica dust fine enough to enter the lungs.

That does not mean every job involving an existing engineered stone benchtop is automatically prohibited. There is an important difference between installing a new engineered stone slab and carrying out permitted work on stone already in place. In NSW, work such as removal, repair, modification and demolition of installed legacy engineered stone may be allowed, but it must be completed under strict silica controls.

A cut-out for a new cooktop, a larger sink opening, a tap hole or an opening for a power point is generally a modification job. It is not a licence to treat the work as routine. The person arranging the job needs to know what material is being cut, what the alteration involves, and how dust will be controlled before anyone brings a saw into the kitchen.

There are limited exclusions and product-specific details within the national rules. Some low-silica products may sit outside the definition of engineered stone. Do not rely on how a benchtop looks, what a salesperson called it years ago or an assumption that all composite surfaces are the same. Supplier information, product documentation and, where needed, professional advice should be checked before work starts.

Existing benchtops can be altered, but not dry cut

The practical message for an existing benchtop is straightforward: dry cutting is not an acceptable shortcut. It can send fine silica dust into the air, onto nearby cabinetry and appliances, and beyond the immediate work area. A kitchen may look clean after a quick wipe-down while respirable dust remains where you cannot see it.

Wet cutting is central to safe stone modification. Water applied correctly at the cutting point suppresses airborne dust and keeps the blade and stone cooler. That cooling matters for workmanship as well as safety. Stone can be damaged by excess heat, vibration and poor support, particularly around narrow bridges between a sink cut-out and tap holes or close to an edge.

Wet cutting does not mean there is no preparation required. Water, slurry and work-zone containment must be managed properly. The surrounding cabinetry, flooring and appliances need protection. Electrical services must be identified and isolated where required. Waste slurry cannot simply be washed into a garden bed or stormwater drain.

For a finished home, the best result comes from treating the site like a controlled work area, not a makeshift workshop. The cut should be measured precisely, the slab supported, and the surrounding surfaces protected before the first pass is made.

What compliant planning looks like on site

A permitted engineered stone modification requires more than a wet saw. NSW work health and safety requirements place duties on businesses and workers to manage silica risk. For higher-risk engineered stone work, this includes planning the task through an engineered stone control plan and applying the controls that the specific job requires.

The detail depends on the cut. Enlarging a sink opening in a thick benchtop is different from drilling one small tap hole. A cut near an existing crack, a join, a hob recess or a wall splashback has its own risks. So does work in an occupied apartment where ventilation, access and protection of common areas need consideration.

Before a specialist attends, clear photos make a difference. Provide images of the full benchtop, the area to be cut, the underside where accessible, and the dimensions of the appliance or fitting. Include the make and model of the cooktop or sink if it is available. This helps confirm the required opening, corner radius, edge clearance and whether the stone needs additional support.

The trade sequence also matters. Cabinet installers, plumbers, electricians and appliance installers should agree on the final position before the stone is altered. Moving a cut-out twice is rarely possible without compromising the benchtop. A few minutes spent checking dimensions can prevent an expensive replacement slab.

Why precision protects the stone and the people around it

Engineered stone is hard, but it is not indestructible. A benchtop can crack when a cut is too close to an unsupported edge, when internal corners are not finished correctly, or when the slab is subjected to excessive heat and force. The risk can be higher with thin material, large openings, existing damage or slabs with concealed weak points.

A specialist approach accounts for the entire slab, not just the line being cut. That means checking access beneath the benchtop, supporting vulnerable sections and using the appropriate method for the material and alteration. It also means knowing when a requested cut is not sensible without changes to cabinetry, appliance selection or support.

The health side is equally serious. Exposure to respirable crystalline silica can cause silicosis and other serious lung disease. The risk is linked to the dust generated and inhaled over time, which is why the controls are not optional just because the cut is small or the job only takes an hour.

Homeowners should be wary of anyone who proposes to cut engineered stone dry, cut it in an occupied kitchen without proper controls, or dismisses silica as somebody else’s problem. Fast work is only useful if the job is safe, clean and accurate.

Questions to ask before booking stone modification work

Ask whether the operator has experience modifying installed engineered stone under wet conditions. Confirm how they will control dust, protect the finished kitchen and manage slurry. Ask whether the requested opening has been checked against the appliance template and whether the slab needs support before or after cutting.

It is also reasonable to ask what happens if the material is not what it appears to be. Natural stone, porcelain, sintered stone and engineered stone can demand different cutting methods and different risk controls. A competent operator will not make a blanket promise before seeing enough information to assess the job.

If your renovation involves a new engineered stone benchtop, pause before ordering or installing it. The 2026 rules are directed at preventing further use of prohibited engineered stone products. Existing-benchtop modification is a separate issue from supplying and installing a new slab, and the distinction matters.
