A cooktop opening stone benchtop modification is not a job for an angle grinder, a tarp and crossed fingers. A cooktop cut-out is also more than a rectangle in a slab. The opening must match the manufacturer’s cut-out dimensions, allow for the cooktop lip or frame, and sit in the correct position above the cabinet. It must also leave enough stone around the edges to maintain strength. Cut it too large and the cooktop may not cover the opening. Cut it too close to an edge, sink cut-out or join and the risk of damage increases.
There is no useful "close enough" when the appliance, cabinetry and stone are already in place. The cut must be marked from verified measurements, not assumptions or a rough template.
The risks of dry cutting inside a finished kitchen
Dry cutting stone indoors creates problems that travel well beyond the benchtop. Some appliances need a heat shield, a separator panel or a defined gap around the underside.

The cut line is then set out precisely. Where an opening is being enlarged, the new line has to account for the existing cut-out rather than treating the surface as untouched stone. The remaining strips of material can be narrow and vulnerable, so the cutting sequence matters.
Proper support beneath the cut area is equally important. The centre piece must not drop unexpectedly as the final section is released. Uncontrolled movement can chip the edge, damage cabinetry or place stress on the slab. A clean result comes from careful setup as much as the blade itself.
Corner treatment also deserves attention. Cooktop manufacturers commonly specify corner radii rather than sharp square corners. Rounded corners help reduce stress concentrations in the stone and give the appliance the fit it was designed for. Trying to force a square, rough-cut opening into a rounded-corner specification is asking for trouble.
What can affect the final result
Most cooktop openings can be completed accurately on site, but every kitchen has variables. Existing damage, a previous oversized opening, very tight edge clearances and unsupported stone can limit what can safely be done. The same applies when a cooktop upgrade needs a much larger opening than the original appliance.
