
Can You Relocate Tap Holes in Stone Safely?
A new mixer, filtered-water tap or Zip tap rarely lines up perfectly with an existing hole. When the benchtop is already installed, the question is whether you can relocate tap holes in stone without removing the slab, damaging the cabinetry or filling the home with hazardous dust.
In many cases, yes. But it is not a job for a general drill, dry grinder or a quick fix from the top of the benchtop. Stone needs to be assessed, measured and cut with the right wet-cutting equipment. The location of the new hole matters just as much as the cut itself.
When a tap hole needs to move
Tap-hole relocation is usually required after a kitchen upgrade, plumbing change or appliance installation. A new sink may have a different tap position. A larger mixer body may need a wider opening. You may be adding filtered water, a boiling-water unit, a soap dispenser or a popup power point and need another penetration through the stone.
Sometimes the existing hole is simply in the wrong position. This can happen when a tap was selected after the benchtop was installed, cabinetry has changed, or a new sink leaves insufficient clearance for the mixer handle to operate properly.

Why hole location matters

The hole must also suit the tap manufacturer’s specifications. Most mixer taps require a standard-size opening, while specialist taps and popup power units can need substantially larger diameters. The visible body is not the only consideration. There must be room below the benchtop for mounting hardware, hoses, filters and access for the plumber.
Before work begins, a good assessment confirms the following in practical terms: the exact centre point, hole diameter, clearance from vulnerable stone edges, and whether the tap can be fitted and serviced from inside the cabinet. It is far better to resolve these details before a drill touches the stone.
Wet cutting protects the benchtop and the home
Dry cutting stone indoors is not acceptable. It creates airborne dust that can spread through cabinets, appliances and nearby rooms. When silica-containing materials are involved, that dust can present serious health risks.
Professional on-site stone modification uses controlled wet-cutting methods. Water suppresses dust at the cutting point and helps keep the stone cool. Keeping the cutting zone cool matters because excessive heat can stress the material, affect the finish and increase the risk of cracking or chipping around the hole.
Wet cutting is not simply a matter of spraying water over a drill. The work area needs preparation to control water and slurry, protect surrounding cabinetry and flooring, and keep the job contained. The cutting process must be slow, stable and accurately guided. Rushing a core hole through stone is how expensive damage happens.
For engineered stone in particular, the material and proposed work must be reviewed against current NSW work health and safety requirements before work is approved. Requirements around engineered stone processing are strict and can change. A competent operator will not treat material identification, dust controls or compliance as an afterthought.
What the on-site process should look like
A precise tap-hole relocation starts before the technician arrives. Clear photos of the benchtop, tap, sink and cabinet interior help identify access issues early. Include a photo from above, one underneath the proposed location, and measurements from fixed reference points such as the wall, sink edge or benchtop end.
On site, the new location is checked against the actual tap and the installed cabinetry. Plan the tap installation with the right trades
The cleanest result comes from coordinating the stone modification with the plumber, cabinet installer and electrician where needed. The plumber should confirm the hole size, tap reach, hose routing and access requirements before the cut is booked.
