
Modify Stone for an Induction Cooktop Safely

An induction cooktop can transform a kitchen, but the appliance is only as good as the cut-out beneath it. If you need to modify stone for an induction cooktop, the job is not a standard cabinet adjustment. A few millimetres out can leave a visible gap, prevent the cooktop from sitting correctly or, worse, crack an expensive benchtop.
For an existing stone top, removal is often the wrong answer. A specialist can enlarge, reshape or create a cooktop cut-out on site with controlled wet cutting, keeping the slab in place and the work area properly managed. That matters most in finished kitchens, where dust, water and damage to nearby cabinetry are real concerns.
Why induction cooktop cut-outs need precision
Induction cooktops have specific cut-out dimensions set by the manufacturer. The glass surface may be substantially larger than the opening, while the body of the unit must sit within the cabinetry below. The cut-out also needs enough clearance from joins, edges, drawers, internal cabinet rails and heat-sensitive materials.
The common scenario is a homeowner replacing a gas cooktop with induction. The new appliance may be wider, deeper or have differently positioned corner radii than the old one. Even when the stated dimensions look close, do not assume the existing hole will work. Manufacturer templates and installation instructions are the reference point.
A correct modification is about more than making a hole bigger. The stone needs to retain enough strength around the opening, especially at the front rail and corners. A weak or poorly finished edge can become the point where a crack starts months later, often after normal kitchen use rather than during the cut itself.
The risks of cutting by hand or dry cutting
Stone is unforgiving. An angle grinder, dry saw or improvised cutting method can chip the surface, overheat the slab and send fine dust through the house. With engineered stone in particular, silica dust is a serious health hazard. It is not ordinary renovation mess that can simply be swept up afterwards.
Dry cutting indoors also spreads contamination into cabinets, appliances, flooring and adjoining rooms. It creates a difficult clean-up job and can expose residents, installers and other trades to airborne dust. Cutting a benchtop without the right equipment, containment and work method is not a shortcut. It is a risk to the people in the home and to the slab itself.
Wet cutting protects the stone and the work area
Professional on-site wet cutting uses water at the cutting point to suppress dust and cool the diamond blade. Cooling is critical because excess heat can stress stone, damage resin in engineered surfaces and increase the chance of cracking or chipping at the cut line.
The work still requires planning. The benchtop, cabinetry, floors and nearby finishes need to be protected before any cutting begins. Water management matters just as much as dust control. A professional operator controls slurry and runoff rather than leaving a mess in cupboards or on newly finished floors.

Existing engineered stone needs extra care
Australia has strict rules around engineered stone because of the risk from respirable crystalline silica. The supply and installation of engineered stone has been prohibited nationally from 1 July 2024, subject to limited exemptions. That does not mean existing benchtops disappear overnight. Many homes have legacy engineered stone already installed, and alteration work must be assessed and completed using compliant, safety-led methods.
Do not treat an older engineered stone benchtop as a DIY material. Before booking work, tell the stone cutting specialist what you know about the slab, including its age, brand if known, thickness and whether it is engineered or natural stone. Clear information helps the operator prepare the correct controls and determine whether the work can be completed safely.
Natural stone, porcelain and sintered surfaces also need the right approach. Granite can be hard and brittle. Marble can chip more easily. Porcelain and sintered stone can fracture if poorly supported. The same cooktop cut-out size can require a different cutting strategy depending on the material and its condition.
What must be checked before modifying stone for an induction cooktop
The appliance should be on site before the stone is cut. Product listings are useful for research, but the actual installation manual and supplied template take priority. Cooktop models can vary between generations, even where the advertised width is the same.
The key checks are the required cut-out width and depth, corner radius, minimum distance to the front and rear edges, and the space required below the benchtop. An induction unit may need ventilation beneath it. If a drawer, oven, shelf, gas pipe or cabinet brace conflicts with the appliance, that issue needs to be resolved before the cut is made.
Power is another separate part of the job. Induction cooktops require electrical work by a licensed electrician. The stone cutter creates the accurate opening in the benchtop. Your electrician confirms circuit capacity, isolation requirements, cable routing and final connection. Coordinating these trades early avoids a cut-out being completed only to find the cooktop cannot be installed as intended.
If you are replacing gas, arrange for a licensed gas fitter to disconnect and cap the old service where required. Never assume that removing the appliance makes the gas connection safe.
The on-site process for a clean, controlled result
A proper stone modification begins with measuring the actual appliance requirements and inspecting the benchtop. The operator checks access, slab condition, nearby joins, cabinet support and the likely path for the cut. If there is a risk that cannot be reasonably managed, it should be raised before work starts, not hidden after the fact.
The area is then prepared to protect cabinets, floors and adjacent surfaces. Wet cutting equipment is set up at the benchtop, with dust suppression and slurry control in place. The cut is made gradually, with particular attention to corners and unsupported sections of stone.
Where a new opening is being created, the removed section cannot simply be allowed to drop into the cabinet. It must be supported and removed in a controlled way. This is one of the details that separates specialist stone work from a rushed renovation cut.
After cutting, the edges are checked and refined as needed so the cooktop can sit correctly. The cooktop installer then fits the appliance in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. Depending on the model, this may involve supplied clips, brackets, seals or ventilation components. Avoid adding silicone, packing materials or fixings that the manufacturer does not specify.
When an enlargement is possible and when it is not
Many existing cooktop openings can be enlarged successfully. It depends on the amount of stone remaining around the new cut-out, the position of joins, the benchtop thickness, cabinet layout and any existing cracks or chips. A small enlargement with sound stone around it is often straightforward. A large change close to an edge or join may need a different solution.
Sometimes the safest option is to choose an induction model that suits the existing opening, adjust cabinetry below the top, or replace the benchtop section. A reputable specialist will explain that trade-off plainly. Promising that every slab can be cut in every location is not precision workmanship.
Photos are the fastest way to begin an assessment. Include a clear image of the full benchtop, the existing cooktop opening, the underside cabinetry where accessible, and the new cooktop’s cut-out specifications. Measurements are helpful, but photos show joins, edges, splashbacks and access restrictions that numbers alone can miss.
Plan the trades in the right order
Book the cooktop delivery first, then confirm the appliance template, stone modification, electrical work and any gas disconnection. Cabinet changes or extra ventilation should be completed before final appliance fitting. This order reduces delays and keeps each trade working from the same dimensions.
A stone benchtop is one of the most visible and costly surfaces in the home. Treat the induction cut-out as specialist work, not the final job for a general grinder. With an accurate template, controlled wet cutting and qualified trades handling their part of the installation, you can upgrade the kitchen without turning a clean benchtop into an expensive repair.
