The job may be a simple hole for a tap or a larger cut-out for a cooktop. Either way, the stone does not become low-risk because the alteration is small. Cutting, grinding, drilling or polishing it without effective controls can release respirable silica dust - particles too fine to see clearly, but small enough to enter the lungs.

Why engineered stone compliance starts before cutting
Australia has introduced strict prohibitions and controls around engineered stone because of the proven risk of silicosis and other serious lung disease. The rules can apply even where the benchtop was installed years ago and the work is only a modification.
For a homeowner, compliance is not about becoming a safety expert. It is about refusing shortcuts. The right time to assess the stone is before anyone brings a grinder into the kitchen.

Confirm the material and the scope

The scope should be clear before the cutter arrives. Measurements for sink, cooktop, power point, popup power point and tap cut-outs need to be confirmed against the actual appliance or fitting, not a rough description over the phone. A few millimetres can decide whether a fitting sits properly or whether a high-value benchtop needs further work.
Photos are useful for quoting and planning, particularly photos of the full benchtop, the proposed cut location, the underside of the cabinet and any joins. They help identify access issues and reduce surprises on the day.
Specify wet cutting, not dry cutting
Wet cutting is the key control for stone alteration work. Water is delivered at the cutting point to suppress airborne dust and cool the blade and stone. Cooling also reduces heat build-up that can stress the surface, chip an edge or contribute to cracking.
Dry cutting engineered stone inside an occupied home or finished renovation is not an acceptable convenience option. A vacuum alone is not a substitute for wet cutting where water suppression is required. Even if a dry-cut job appears tidy, fine silica dust can settle through cupboards, drawers, appliances and adjoining rooms.
Wet cutting does create slurry, so the work area still needs proper protection and clean-up. Benchtops, cabinetry, flooring and nearby walls should be shielded. Slurry must be contained and removed safely rather than washed into household drains or left to dry on surfaces. Good compliance protects the people in the space and the kitchen itself.
Control the work area
A safe mobile cutting setup is deliberate, not improvised. The operator needs sufficient room to position equipment, manage water, protect finished surfaces and keep other people away from the cutting zone. Children, pets and unrelated trades should not be moving through the area while the work is underway.
Before cutting begins, clear loose items from the benchtop and cupboards below. Remove or protect appliances, and cover areas that could be damaged by water or slurry. Ventilation can help overall site comfort, but it does not replace water suppression, containment or safe work practices. The aim is to stop dust becoming airborne at the source, not simply move it elsewhere.

Stone cutting is specialised work. It requires the correct wet-cut equipment, diamond tooling, water management and knowledge of how different slabs respond under load. An inexperienced cut can leave visible chips, blow out the underside of a hole, damage a cabinet or create a crack that travels well beyond the new opening.
Personal protective equipment still has a role, but it is the last line of defence. Respiratory protection, eye protection, hearing protection and suitable clothing should support effective wet cutting controls, not excuse poor cutting methods.
Ask practical questions before booking. Will the cut be wet? How will water and slurry be contained? How will cabinetry and floors be protected? What happens if the location is too close to a join or unsupported edge? Straight answers are a good sign that the operator understands both the safety and workmanship side of the job.
Protecting the benchtop while meeting safety requirements
Compliance and quality are closely connected. Water cooling helps manage silica dust, but it also helps preserve the stone during cutting. Excess heat can affect engineered stone resins and increase the chance of damage, especially when a cut is tight to an edge or corner.
The best cut location may not always be the first location marked on the benchtop. A specialist may recommend shifting a hole slightly, adding support below a weak section, changing the sequence of cuts or declining a modification that creates an unreasonable risk of breakage. That is not unnecessary delay. It is informed judgement on a surface that cannot be easily repaired once damaged.
Trades should allow for this early in the schedule. The stone modification should be completed before final plumbing, electrical fit-off and appliance installation where possible.
